Ruapekapeka - The Last of The Northern Wars
This exhibition, in celebration of Matariki - The Maori New Year - will showcase the Ruapekapeka collection and heighten awareness of the pa.
The exhibition features many artefacts from Chief Kawiti’s pa – the site of the last battle between Ngapuhi and the British in 1846. The construction of the Pa withstood 10 days of British fire and has been recognized as an engineering marvel.
Text panels will include information on the construction of the pa and the battle, along with historic and recent images of the pa, and the key people associated.
The documentary 'The New Zealand Wars: The War that Britain Lost' by James Bellich will be screening during the exhibition, providing a detailed insight of events leading up to the battle and including the battle of Ruapekapeka.
