Waitangi Treaty Grounds

The Waitangi Treaty Grounds, overlooking the Bay of Islands, is New Zealand's pre-eminent historic site.

It was here on February 6th, 1840, that the Treaty of Waitangi was first signed between Maori and the British Crown. The Treaty Grounds are part of the 506 hectare (1000 acre) Waitangi National Trust estate, which was gifted to the nation by Lord and Lady Bledisloe in 1932.

There are a number of cultural and personal activities as well as group tours available.

See Nga Puawai o Waitangi Cultural Performance. The resident Maori cultural group entertains and informs with a 30-minute journey in traditional and contemporary story and song. Performances are at 10.30a.m 11.30a.m 1.30p.m and 2.30p.m from Mid October to 30 April. Hours are subject to change during the winter months. $12.00 per adult (price does not include grounds admission), $5.00 per child.

Embrace Waitangi (regular guided tours) are a 60 minute guided tour of the grounds by local Maori guides will give you a unique insight into this special and spiritual place. Daily tours 9.15a.m. 10.30a.m. 1.30p.m. and 3.00p.m for the summer months of 1 October to 30 April. Hours are subject to change during the winter months. $22.00 per adult includes admission, $5.00 per child.
