The University of Waikato Music Department
The University of Waikato’s Music Department, ranked number 1 in New Zealand *, is behind some of the finest music to be heard in the region. With a teaching staff that includes leading baritone David Griffiths, along with outstanding pianist Katherine Austin, cellist James Tennant and violinist Lara Hall, talented students tackle everything from masterpieces of chamber music to contemporary opera productions.
Music Department staff are core members of the recently formed New Zealand Chamber Soloists, which promises to be one of the country's leading professional ensembles.
Okta, the contemporary music group, offers many premieres in its programmes, blending new music and twentieth century classics.
Using the prize-winning venue of the WEL Academy of Performing Arts, the Department also hosts national and international artists in its popular lunchtime concert series and occasional evening events. Upcoming highlights include British piano virtuoso Martin Roscoe, Australian-based Kiwi classical guitartist John Couch and the Universities' own Chamber Orchestra's winter performance to name but a few.
