New Plymouth Guided Historical Walk

Visit the historic buildings and imagine the trials and triumphs experienced by the early settlers in this three kilometre guided historic walk of New Plymouth.

The New Plymouth Guided Historical Walk takes you through the central city area with an experienced local guide relating events, developments and anecdotes - from the settler's arrival in New Plymouth in 1841 through to when a viable community was established some 40 or 50 years later.

On the one hand the early years of settlement involve stories of an initial struggle to survive in conditions of desperate isolation and deprivation followed by a military siege of the new township, warfare and sickness.

On the other hand there are tales of colourful individual characters and successful developments of farming and business enterprises as the community found its feet.

The tour guide’s commentary is backed up with an illustrated booklet containing the main points of interest. This provides you with a permanent record of your experience as well as a useful bibliography should you wish to undertake further reading.

When: 1pm Sundays or by arrangement through the i-SITE Visitor Information Centre.
Duration: Approximately two hours.

Note: Suitable for children over 10 years old through to senior citizens. There is a small hill climb of moderate incline that can be omitted.
