Tūpare
The Tūpare gardens are a beautifully restored garden and Chapman-Taylor home owned and managed by the Taranaki Regional Council.
Located on a hillside overlooking the Waiwhakaiho River, this premier landscaped garden tells stories of the property's original developer, the prominent businessman Sir Russell Matthews, and his family.
Enjoy a relaxed picnic with friends or one of the walks around the stunning grounds created by Russell Matthews. Matthews had a strong vision, a sense of style and a good eye for landscaping. He enjoyed fashionable plants and liked to be first to acquire them. His vision lives on at this grand property, which the people of the region are free to enjoy.
The unique house was initially designed by the renowned James Chapman-Taylor, built under the direction of Russell Matthews. Much of the furniture and accessories were bought on overseas trips, or commissioned to Matthews' specifications.
From 1 October to 31 March, free house tours are conducted at 11am on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. Meet at the front door.
