The Great South Road – Where Cultures Converge

A large-scale (10 metres by 5.5 metres) exhibition of photographs by Peter James Quinn documenting life along Auckland’s Great South Road.

The images were produced while Quinn photographed on contract for New Zealand Geographic magazine. They are featured in issue 61 of the magazine, along with an essay by Auckland historian, Vaughan Yarwood.

The exhibition was commissioned by the Counties–Manukau Pacific Trust, with funding coming from the South Auckland Charitable Trust, to install a permanent display of 33 of Peter Quinn’s contemporary “Great South Road” images, accompanied by an overview of the Great South Road’s history by Vaughan Yarwood.

The exhibition will be an opportunity to showcase an iconic landmark and important piece of Auckland’s history, its diversity of ethnic cultures. It will help to put more documentary photography on view for the city’s population to appreciate.
