Lest We Forget ANZAC Commemorative Weekend - Nelson
Dramatix Theatre Development Trust presents the 3 annual 'Lest We Forget ANZAC Commemorative Weekend' event at Nelson's Founders Park on April 24th and 25th 2010.
2010’s emphasis will be on ‘Prisoners of War’ with a specially built replica POW camp in the Energy centre, complete with prisoner escape attempts and patrolling soldiers.
Also there will be two plays performed with a POW theme based on local stories.
We’re ‘reconstructing’ a bombed out French village in the Village green that our battle re-enactors will conduct their gun battles in and we have a war machines (bren gun etc) display as well.
We’ll still have the usual highlights – the popular 'Walls of Remembrance' displays, Ian Lyle 's (and horse dusty) Boer War camp with cart rides for children this year, evacuee re-enactments, dad’s army – ‘allo ‘allo, and patrolling soldiers checking 'papers'.
There will be air-raid warnings, music, punch and judy and the replica field kitchen operating. An amazing event that allows us all to learn and discover what our wartime history meant to us as New Zealanders - the changes it wrought, the discoveries we made as a Nation, but more importantly - to remember those lost and what they gave up for us.
