Bushy Park Homestead

A native bird sanctuary, virgin rainforest and Edwardian homestead.

Bushy Park Homestead is a historic 22-roomed residence designed by the notable architect Charles Tilleard Natusch for Frank Moore, a well known Hereford cattle and racehorse breeder of Kai Iwi near Wanganui. The homestead was built in 1906 at a cost of £4,566.

Bushy Park’s design is more formal than most of Natusch’s houses primarily due to the influence of Moore, who preferred a more classical style, incorporating classical columns. The home is constructed in timber on concrete foundations with a tiled roof. The interior features some fine panelling and a magnificent carved mantelpiece in the dining room.

On a local level, Bushy Park Homestead is significant as the past home of Frank Moore, and because it was built by local builders and craftsmen. On a national level, Bushy Park is significant for its association with one of New Zealand's most notable architects, Charles Tilleard Natusch, and for its association for the last 40 years with the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand.

The Homestead has bed and breakfast accommodation with evening meals available by arrangement and Backpacker-style accommodation available in the bunkhouse. Fully licensed, with a cafe menu and alfresco dining available.

Bushy Park is a protected native bird sanctuary and is home to many native birds, including endangered or rare species such as saddlebacks and kiwis.

Bushy Park offers wonderful walking tracks through the lowland rainforest and wetland areas.
