Museum of Wellington
Discover Wellington’s very own museum. Experience the events, people, and cultures that have defined New Zealand’s capital city. Nine permanent exhibitions will take you back a thousand years and then lead you to a vibrant present-day Wellington.
Our ever-changing feature exhibitions delve into social, cultural, historical and maritime stories from Wellington and beyond. Currently on is 'War in Paradise' which tells the captivating stories of New Zealand soldiers based in New Caledonia during World War 2.
The Museum embraces stunning technology to bring two Maori legends to life in 'A Millennium Ago', while Gaylene Preston's moving short film 'The Wahine Disaster' documents the 1968 maritime tragedy.
'Telling Tales' offers 100 stories of the major events and developments in Wellington over the 20th century, and 'By The Sea We Live' celebrates Wellington's maritime heritage.
The Museum also provides free events and public programmes throughout the year.
