Len Lye Foundation

Experimental film-maker, poet, painter and kinetic sculptor Len Lye (1901-1980) is one of New Zealand’s most internationally renowned artists. Shortly before his death, Lye established the Len Lye Foundation, a non-profit incorporated society, to provide for the conservation, reproduction and promotion of his work.

The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth is the major repository of the Len Lye Foundation Collection and features regular exhibitions of his work. In partnership with the gallery and the New Plymouth District Council, the Foundation is also seeking to establish the Len Lye Centre in New Plymouth, a museum dedicated to Lye’s work and ideas.

Lye encouraged the posthumous development of his large sculptures, and examples of these works built by the Foundation can be seen on the Wellington waterfront and the New Plymouth foreshore.
