Karori Sanctuary

Karori Wildlife Sanctuary is open to the public 364 days a year, this world-first urban conservation attraction is New Zealand's most accessible and well-established 'mainland island'.

An 8.6km fence keeps out the 13 most harmful non-native pests, and 14 nationally or locally-endangered animal species have been re-introduced, including tuatara, little spotted kiwi, kaka, hihi and saddleback.

With over 30km of bushwalks, you can easily spend the whole day exploring this natural paradise. But for people with limited time or mobility, many of the highlights can be seen on an easy 1.5-hour circular walk. Daytime and nocturnal tours with expert guides are also available.

Although the Sanctuary feels like it's a million miles away, it is only five minutes from Wellington CBD, and well-served by public transport. It is also just 20 minutes walk from the top of the Cable Car, via attractive Kelburn Village.
