Karori Sanctuary
Karori Sanctuary is the first urban conservation project of its kind in the world. It is now 12 years into a 500-year journey to ecologically-restore 225ha of native bush and wetland.
The Sanctuary is a cage-free safe haven for some of NZ's rarest birds and reptiles, including little spotted kiwi, hihi and tuatara (all found nowhere else on the NZ mainland).
It is also a dynamic community-focused project and a showcase of conservation in action.
