International Institute of Modern Letters

The International Institute of Modern Letters (IIML) was established at Wellington’s Victoria University to promote and foster contemporary imaginative writing.

Directed by Bill Manhire, with the ongoing support of founder and philanthropist Glenn Schaeffer, the Institute runs the University’s renowned creative writing programme. It also hosts an annual Writer in Residence as well as administering a number of scholarships and awards including Australasia’s largest single literary award; the $65,000 Prize in Modern Letters.

Other projects and activities include the annual Writers on Mondays programme; the New Zealand Post National Schools Festival and Poetry Award and hosting of the electronic publications Turbine and Best New Zealand Poems.
