Somebody’s Darling
Somebody’s Darling tells the poignant stories of the lives and deaths of those buried at the historic Napier Hill Cemetery.
Tales from the Victorian era through to the 1931 earthquake are uncovered in this exhibition jointly curated by Gail Pope, the archivist at the HBMAG, and well known filmmaker and writer Peter Wells.
Somebody’s Darling focuses not only on the well known local identities buried in this historic landmark, which opened in 1855 adjacent to the Botanical Gardens, but also the ‘everyday’ men, women and children who also have extraordinary stories associated with their lives, and their deaths.
This fascinating exhibition contains a range of contemporary and historic photographic images as well as objects from the HBMAG collection, including treasures such as a recently conserved illuminated scroll presented to the institution by Robert Lynam in 1888.
Accompanying this exhibition will be a publication, and a brochure for self guided walks of the Cemetery.
