Christchurch Symphony Orchestra
The Christchurch Symphony is amongst the most versatile orchestras in New Zealand. It covers symphonic repertoire from baroque to modern 21st-century commissions, pops, jazz, music from current popular shows and family entertainment. It also runs educational programmes such as Cool Sounds for primary schoolers and Kids to Concerts for secondary schoolers. The Symphony’s Outreach programme includes the West Coast, Nelson and Marlborough, and brings workshops and concerts to schools and musical groups in these areas.
The orchestra is an artistic icon for Christchurch, which has had an orchestra for nearly 50 years. The orchestra has its origins in the John Ritchie String Orchestra in 1958. It is the South Island's only professional orchestra and has a core of 40 tenured players.
