Central South Island Tourism
Central South Island Tourism is the Regional Tourism Organisation for the Central South Island area. It is responsible for the destination marketing and promotion of the region. This encompasses Canterbury’s second city, Timaru and the quintessential Kiwi towns of Geraldine, Peel Forest, Pleasant Point and Temuka.
Timaru
Located on State Highway 1 and on the alternative Christchurch/Queenstown route, Timaru is the pivotal heart of the Central South Island region. With daily flights servicing the region from New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, and only two hours travel from Christchurch International Airport, the region is well placed in the heart of the mainland.
Highlights
- The striking piazza, with stunning views stretching from Caroline Bay across to the snow-clad mountains.
- Caroline Bay - Holiday-makers have been flocking to the much-loved stretch of one of New Zealand’s safest swimming beaches for more than 100 years.
- Art galleries & museums reflect the artistic culture flourishing in the region
- The city of roses with streets and roadsides awash with vibrant colourings and public gardens, such as the Trevor Griffiths Rose Garden remarkably showcasing over 1100 varieties.
- History - carefully preserved buildings such as the southern hemispheres only remaining solid stone Landing Services Building (now the Timaru i-SITE Information Centre) confirm that this is a community which values its heritage & culture.
For some family fun or a romantic getaway – this region has something for everyone. With great shopping, an extensive range of accommodation, dining establishments and recreational options available, Timaru is perfectly placed for you to explore the outdoors as a gateway to the surrounding hinterland.
Hidden treasures are also to be found with ancient Maori rock art sites providing intriguing insights into life in this place half a millennium ago.
Surrounding Timaru, and all within 45 minutes drive, are the quintessential Kiwi towns of Geraldine, Peel Forest, Pleasant Point and Temuka.
• Geraldine, a quaintly unique village with a thriving arts and culture industry. The pretty main street bustles and the local gourmet food producers are a major draw card.
• A short distance from Geraldine stands spectacular Peel Forest. A popular recreational area for all, a true outdoor playground with walking, white water rafting & horse trekking just a few of the activities on offer.
• Pleasant Point is an ideal starting point to explore an exceptional collection of Maori Rock Art and sample the tastes of an award winning vineyard. Don’t miss visiting the town’s museum and railway with its fully restored steam locomotives and the world’s only Ford Model T railcar.
