Tourism Strategy omits cultural sector

Monday, May 21st, 2007

The draft New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015 was released on 16 May 2007 and is available online. The Ministry of Tourism is seeking feedback on the strategy by Wednesday 27 June 2007 via the electronic template on their website or by email.

The draft strategy is the result of a mid-term review of the New Zealand Strategy 2010. The 2010 strategy was developed to guide the sustainable growth of the tourism sector. While it highlighted the important role that culture and heritage plays in the appeal of New Zealand as a tourist destination - particularly for Tourism New Zealand’s target market the interactive traveller - it also indicated that the cultural sector was one area that could benefit from further development in order to maximize its potential.

As a result, a substantial research project was undertaken to identify what cultural experiences tourists were seeking and how they could be improved. In addition, five regions – Northland, Taranaki, Wellington, Nelson and Hawkes Bay - were awarded $10,000 to develop a cultural tourism plan and a further $100,000 to implement that plan.

A fair deal for visual artists?

Monday, April 23rd, 2007

Collecting art has become a million dollar enterprise in New Zealand, but are too many of our visual artists getting only crumbs from the table?

Since it was released on Monday, a discussion paper on a possible resale royalty right scheme for artworks resold on the secondary market has already set off a lively debate.

As expected we are hearing strong views both for and against the introduction of this right.

At this stage, the government does not have a firm position one way or the other and is hoping the current publicity will help bring forward the full range of views by the 22 June deadline.

Protect our treasures

Proposed logo for protected cultural treasuresThe New Zealand government is interested in ratifying an international treaty designed to protect important national treasures in times of war. A new discussion paper seeks your input on which cultural treasures in New Zealand should be protected during armed conflict.

Cultural property protected by the treaty gets this groovy logo attached to it. Perhaps I’m biased, but I’ve love to slap one on the NZLive.com server (just kidding …).

The paper has a list of indicative cultural property earmarked for protection, and the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Helen Clark is encouraging museums, libraries, iwi, archives and heritage organisations, amongst others, to participate in forming this list.

See the press release and also the consultation paper and questionnaire on the website of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

Best get your submission in on what you think makes the cut. Submissions close mid June.
