NZLive website statistics - good news
April 5th, 2007We’ve had a few emails from people wanting to know how NZLive.com is doing and what benefits we’re bringing to NZ cultural organisations. I’ve posted about our marketing programme earlier on, so I thought I’d mention our web statistics.
Even if your events are already listed on your own website, NZLive.com provides an additional, nation-wide channel to promote your cultural experiences and services.
For a website that’s six months old, we’re doing very well. NZLive.com had 43,000 visitors in March, and traffic is building nicely. The percentage of return visitors has also been increasingly steadily to 23% - that’s something we want to increase over time. At least one person per day subscribes to the NZLive.com newsletter, which is great - this is possibly our most important means of getting word out there about NZLive.com as well as encouraging visitors to return to the website.
Which events are popular? The good news is that events across all the categories are being viewed. The website’s most popular sections are live events (especially music), festivals and sport. We are a country that loves festivals - producing them and attending them (see our article on the subject)! There’s very few places on the web where you can find event information across all the sporting codes, so we think that at least partly explain sports’ popularity.
Here’s some examples. The listing for Te Matatini Festival, held in February, was viewed over 2500 times. AK07 events have been seen over 4000 times. Historic Places Trust’s listing have been viewed over 1700 times, and New Zealand Cricket over 1200 times. Circa Theatre’s listings have had over 800 views and DANZ over 600.
The Museum of Wellington City and Sea and the Brick Bay Sculpture Trail have both reported visitors referred from NZLive.com. And another important measure - the most popular links on the website are to ticketing agencies, indicating that NZLive.com is truly encouraging participation in cultural activities.

Please explain the differential in your stats compared to AC Nielson. You state over 43,000 for March versus AC Nielson at 35,373. You recent newsletter to your organisations stated over 40,000 visitors for February versus AC Nielson at 35,407. You in fact had less visitors in March than February. The differences are too material to be given to rounding. Surely this is misleading.
Thanks for your comment, Michelle. Our figures are accurate. I should have noted that our statistics are taken from Google Analytics (not Nielsen Netratings). Contrary to your comments, the Nielsen Netratings figures do show a rise between February and March for both visitors and unique browsers. In addition, I’ve reported on number of visitors, and you appear to have reported on unique browsers (a different way of measuring progress).
We are most interested in the trends, which are looking good for NZLive.
Speaking of Google Analytics, this is a free application that provides excellent analysis - I really recommend it to folks running websites. I still haven’t investigated every one of the features, but you can track visitor numbers, return visitors, referrals (where your visitors are coming from) and popular pages. You can also set goals for your website - the number of visitors who subscribe to your newsletter or complete a search, for example. Useful, too, for when you make changes to your website and want to track the results.
